Bass clef notes

On the bass clef the five lines are G B D F A from bottom to top ("Good Boys Do Fine Always") and the four spaces are A C E G ("All Cows Eat Grass"). Middle C sits on the first ledger line above the staff.

What the bass clef symbol means

The bass clef looks like a backwards C with two dots. Those dots are the important part: they sit on either side of the fourth line from the bottom, and that line is F3, the F below middle C. That is why it is also called the F clef. Every other note is counted from that line, one letter per line or space.

Bass clef is for lower sounds: the left hand of the piano, bass guitar, cello, trombone, tuba, bassoon and low voices.

The lines: G, B, D, F, A

Good Boys Do Fine Always

Read from the bottom line up. Some teachers use "Great Big Dogs Fight Animals"; any sentence with those first letters works. Like the treble clef, the lines skip every other letter, and the skipped letters are in the spaces.

The spaces: A, C, E, G

All Cows Eat Grass

Lines and spaces together run straight through the alphabet: G (line), A (space), B (line), C (space), D (line), E (space), F (line), G (space), A (line). Know one, and the next position up is the next letter.

Where middle C sits

Above the top line (A) comes the space above the staff (B), then the first ledger line above: middle C, C4. Below the bottom line, the space under the staff is F2, and the first ledger line below is E2, which is where bass guitar music writes the low open E string (the bass guitar sounds one octave lower than written, so the notes stay on the staff).

Bass and treble together: the grand staff

Piano music joins a treble staff and a bass staff with a brace. Together they are called the grand staff. The two meet at middle C: it is one ledger line above the bass staff and one ledger line below the treble staff, and both are the same key. Play the notes below in order and you will hear the line of notes carry on from one staff straight into the other.

C4 appears twice (the last bass note and the first treble note): same key, same sound.

A useful shortcut: a note in bass clef sits one line or space lower than the same letter sits in treble clef. The bottom line is G in bass and E in treble, for example. It helps to know why the positions feel familiar, but in practice it is faster to learn the bass landmarks directly: F3 (between the dots), middle C (ledger line above), and G2 (bottom line).

Practice: name the bass clef note

The quiz covers the natural notes from E2 to middle C, the range of most left-hand piano parts and bass lines. You'll hear each note after you answer.

A note appears on the bass clef. Pick its letter. You'll hear it either way.

Next: the treble clef notes, the names of the piano keys, or the whole picture on how to read music. Bass players can see these same notes on the neck on bass fretboard notes, and check their tuning with the bass tuner. For the left hand at the piano, start with the root notes of the first piano chords; when you are ready for sharps and flats, see key signatures and intervals.

Bass clef questions

What are the bass clef line notes?

From the bottom line up: G, B, D, F, A. The usual memory sentence is "Good Boys Do Fine Always".

What are the bass clef space notes?

From the bottom space up: A, C, E, G. Remember them with "All Cows Eat Grass".

Where is middle C on the bass clef?

On the first ledger line above the staff. It is the same pitch as the middle C written on the ledger line below the treble staff; the two clefs meet there.

Why is the bass clef called the F clef?

Its two dots sit on either side of the fourth line from the bottom, and that line is F3, the F below middle C. Older forms of the sign were a stylized letter F.

Is bass clef harder to read than treble clef?

Not harder, just shifted. Every note in bass clef sits one line or space lower than the same letter in treble clef would sit (bass bottom line G, treble bottom line E). Learn the bass landmarks separately rather than converting from treble in your head.
