How to play F♯7 on guitar
Shape 1, 2-4-2-3-2-2, reading from the low E string on the left, starts at the 2nd fret:
- Index finger lies flat over all the strings, just behind the 2nd fret wire.
- A♯: middle finger, 3rd fret of the G string.
- C♯: ring finger, 4th fret of the A string.
- Check the barre one string at a time. A dead string under the index finger usually means the finger has drifted away from the fret wire.
Other ways to play F♯7
- x-x-4-3-2-0: open shape at the 2nd fret, easy. A small shape for quick changes and a lighter sound.
- x-9-11-9-11-9: barre shape at the 9th fret, medium. The root is on the A string; it's the A7 shape moved up the neck.
- x-9-x-9-7-6: movable shape at the 6th fret, medium. Fewer strings, so it sounds lighter and is quicker to change to.
F♯7 the capo way
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open E7 shape (0-2-0-1-0-0), capo on the 4th fret and play the open D7 shape (x-x-0-2-1-2), capo on the 6th fret and play the open C7 shape (x-3-2-3-1-0) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open B7 shape (x-2-1-2-0-2). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Moving between F♯7 and its neighbours
These are the changes you'll meet most often with F♯7, using the first shape of each chord.
- B (the V7 pulls home a fifth below): F♯7 (2-4-2-3-2-2) to B (x-2-4-4-4-2): the index finger lays across the A to high E strings at the 2nd fret, move the middle finger to the D string, 4th fret, the ring finger goes to the G string, 4th fret, the pinky finger comes down on the B string, 4th fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. F♯ carries over from one chord to the other. B on guitar
- Bmaj7 (I in B major): F♯7 (2-4-2-3-2-2) to Bmaj7 (x-2-4-3-4-2): your middle finger stays put, the index finger lays across the A to high E strings at the 2nd fret, the ring finger slides across to the D string at the same fret, the pinky finger comes down on the B string, 4th fret. Listen for F♯ and A♯, which stay put while the rest moves. Bmaj7 on guitar
- G♯m7 (vi in B major): F♯7 (2-4-2-3-2-2) to G♯m7 (4-6-4-4-4-4): the index finger lays across the low E to high E strings at the 4th fret, the middle finger goes to the A string, 6th fret. Shared note: F♯. G♯m7 on guitar
F♯7 is a dominant seventh chord: a major triad with a flattened seventh on top. Use F♯7 where you want motion: it leans toward the chord a fifth below and turns up on almost every blues. On guitar you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
Practice F♯7 in two minutes
Before strumming, play 2-4-2-3-2-2 note by note: F♯ then C♯ then E then A♯ then C♯ then F♯. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Next, alternate 2-4-2-3-2-2 and x-x-4-3-2-0, slowly, until the change takes less than a beat.
Written G♭7, it's the same chord with the same frets.
