How to play Gsus2 on piano
From G, go 2 half steps up to A then 5 half steps up to D. Those 3 keys are Gsus2.
- Right hand: 1 on G, 3 on A and 5 on D.
- Left hand: 5 on G, 3 on A and 1 on D.
- On the keyboard it's white, white and white keys, the same pattern as Csus2, Dsus2, Fsus2 and Asus2, so your hand shape carries over.
Gsus2 inversions
- root position: G–A–D. RH 1-3-5.
- 1st inversion: A–D–G, with A at the bottom. Right hand 1-2-5.
- 2nd inversion: D–G–A (D in the bass). Fingers 1-3-5.
Use the inversions to stay put: the next chord is often one inversion away from where your hand already is, as the changes below show.
Changing from Gsus2 to the chords around it
These are the changes you'll meet most often with Gsus2, using the first shape of each chord.
- G (resolves up to the third): Gsus2 to G: play G in root position (G–B–D) and G and D stay under the same fingers, while A moves up to B. G on piano
- C (IV in G major): Gsus2 to C: play C in 2nd inversion (G–C–E) and G stays under the same finger, while A moves up to C and D up to E. C on piano
- D (V in G major): Gsus2 to D: play D in 1st inversion (F♯–A–D) and A and D stay under the same fingers, while G moves down to F♯. D on piano
Gsus2 replaces the third with the second, so it is neither major nor minor. The open second in Gsus2 usually rises to the third, so play Gsus2 then G and listen for it to settle. Play it solid and then broken to hear the difference.
A short Gsus2 drill
Roll the chord up and back down, G, A, D, A, G, before playing it as a block. Then climb the inversions: G–A–D, then A–D–G, then D–G–A.
