The sound of F major pentatonic scale

F major pentatonic drops the two notes of F major that create half steps, the 4th and the 7th. What's left can't clash with itself, which is why it's the first scale many guitarists improvise with over a F chord.

Drop B♭ and E from F major and this is what's left. The five notes spell F6 and Fadd9 at the same time, which is why it sounds so open.

F major pentatonic scale is F major scale without B♭ and E. Hear F major scale and compare.

Where your hands go

On the piano it uses only white keys.

The guitar box starts with the root at the 1st fret of the low E string and spans frets 0–5: 12 notes, low string to high, two per string.

What to play it over

Five notes are too few to stack a chord on every degree, but these chords use only notes from the scale, so the scale fits over each of them: F, Fsus2, F6, Fadd9, Dm, Dm7, Gsus2, Csus2, Gsus4, Csus4, Dsus4.

Same notes, different home: D minor pentatonic (starting on the 5th note, D). Play any of them over a drone on its first note and the mood changes, even though the keys you press don't.

Finding F major pentatonic on the neck

Find F first: fret 1 and 13 of the 6th string, fret 8 of the 5th. Box positions begin at frets 1, 3, 5, 8 and 10 on the 6th string. Learn the first, then connect it to its neighbor. With no half steps there are no clashing notes to avoid, which is why it is the first scale many guitarists improvise with.

On the piano, F major pentatonic scale uses no black keys at all.

Thirds make the scale sound musical instead of step-by-step: F–A, G–C, A–D, C–F, D–G.
