How to play F♯ on ukulele
Shape 1, 3-1-2-1, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the C string at the 1st fret, which is C♯.
- Put your middle finger on the A string at the 1st fret, which is A♯.
- Put your ring finger on the E string at the 2nd fret, which is F♯.
- Put your pinky finger on the G string at the 3rd fret, which is A♯.
- Your little finger has a job in this shape; it gets stronger in a week or two of short daily practice.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play F♯
- 6-6-6-4: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 11-10-9-9: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
F♯ the capo way
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 1st fret and play the open F shape (2-0-1-0), capo on the 2nd fret and play the open E shape (1-4-0-2), capo on the 4th fret and play the open D shape (2-2-2-0) or capo on the 6th fret and play the open C shape (0-0-0-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Changing from F♯ to the chords around it
These are the changes you'll meet most often with F♯, using the first shape of each chord.
- B (IV in F♯ major): F♯ (3-1-2-1) to B (4-3-2-2): the index finger goes to the E string, 2nd fret, the middle finger goes to the A string, 2nd fret, your ring finger lands on the C string, 3rd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Shared note: F♯. B on ukulele
- C♯ (V in F♯ major): F♯ (3-1-2-1) to C♯ (6-5-4-4): your index finger lands on the E string, 4th fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 4th fret, the ring finger goes to the C string, 5th fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. The two chords share C♯, which is why the change sounds smooth. C♯ on ukulele
- E♭m (vi in F♯ major): F♯ (3-1-2-1) to E♭m (3-3-2-1): move the index finger to the A string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the E string, 2nd fret, your ring finger lands on the G string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. F♯ and A♯ carry over from one chord to the other. E♭m on ukulele
F♯ has the stable, upbeat sound of every major triad. All 3 notes of F♯ fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Getting F♯ under your fingers
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: A♯, C♯, F♯, A♯. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 6-6-6-4 and back four times without looking at your hand.
G♭ is another spelling of F♯. Same shape, same sound.
