How to play Am6 on piano
Count keys (black and white) from A: 3 half steps up to C, 4 half steps up to E then 2 half steps up to F♯. That's the whole chord: 4 keys.
- Right hand: 1 on A, 2 on C, 3 on E and 5 on F♯.
- Left hand: 5 on A, 3 on C, 2 on E and 1 on F♯.
- On the keyboard it's white, white, white and black keys, the same pattern as Em6, so your hand shape carries over.
Am6 inversions

Am6 chord changes
Songs rarely hold Am6 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.

- C (IV in G major): Am6 to C: play C in root position (C–E–G) and C and E stay under the same fingers, while F♯ moves up to G. C on piano
- G (I in G major): Am6 to G: play G in 1st inversion (B–D–G), while C moves down to B, C up to D and F♯ up to G. G on piano
Am6 is A minor with a major sixth added. Am6 sounds moody and cinematic and often replaces Am as the home chord of a minor jazz tune. Play it solid and then broken to hear the difference.
