How to play Am6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-0-2-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: G string, 2nd fret (A).
- Middle finger: E string, 2nd fret (F♯).
- Let the open C and A strings ring (C and A).
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Am6
- 5-6-5-7: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 9-9-8-9: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
- 11-12-12-12: movable shape at the 11th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Am6 the capo way
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 7th fret and play the open Dm6 shape (2-2-1-2). The chord sounds as Am6 because the capo raises every string by 7 half steps.
Changing from Am6 to the chords around it
Songs rarely hold Am6 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- D (V in G major): Am6 (2-0-2-0) to D (2-2-2-0): your index finger stays put, the middle finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. The two chords share A and F♯, which is why the change sounds smooth. D on ukulele
- C (IV in G major): Am6 (2-0-2-0) to C (0-0-0-3): your index finger lands on the A string, 3rd fret. C and E carry over from one chord to the other. C on ukulele
- G (I in G major): Am6 (2-0-2-0) to G (0-2-3-2): the index finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, the middle finger slides across to the A string at the same fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. G on ukulele
Am6 is A minor with a major sixth added. With four strings, shape 1 leaves out the perfect fifth (E); the ear fills it in, and the chord still reads as Am6. The usual guitar shape, x-0-2-2-1-2, has room for all of them. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
Practice Am6 in two minutes
Before strumming, play 2-0-2-0 note by note: A then C then F♯ then A. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Next, alternate 2-0-2-0 and 5-6-5-7, slowly, until the change takes less than a beat.
