F augmented chord on piano (Faug)
Faug is F, A and C♯. F is the white key just left of the group of three black keys. Play it once at full speed, then at a quarter to hear every note.

- Notes
- F · A · C♯
- Formula
- 1 · 3 · ♯5
How to play Faug on piano
Start on F, count 4 half steps up to A then 4 half steps up to C♯. That's the whole chord: 3 keys.
- Right hand: 1 on F, 3 on A and 5 on C♯.
- Left hand: 5 on F, 3 on A and 1 on C♯.
- On the keyboard it's white, white and black keys, the same pattern as Caug and Gaug, so your hand shape carries over.
Faug inversions
- root position: F–A–C♯. Fingers 1-3-5.
- 1st inversion: A–C♯–F, with A at the bottom. Right hand 1-2-5.
- 2nd inversion: C♯–F–A (C♯ in the bass). Right hand 1-3-5.
Nobody plays every chord in root position. The inversions let Faug sit wherever the previous chord left your hand.
Moving between Faug and its neighbours
These are the changes you'll meet most often with Faug, using the first shape of each chord.
- B♭ (the raised fifth pushes up into the IV): Faug to B♭: play B♭ in 2nd inversion (F–B♭–D) and F stays under the same finger, while A moves up to B♭ and C♯ up to D. B♭ on piano
- C (V in F major): Faug to C: play C in 1st inversion (E–G–C), while F moves down to E, A down to G and C♯ down to C. C on piano
- Dm (vi in F major): Faug to Dm: play Dm in 1st inversion (F–A–D) and F and A stay under the same fingers, while C♯ moves up to D. Dm on piano
Faug is an augmented triad: two major thirds stacked, with a raised fifth. Faug is a stepping stone: it often moves on to the IV chord, with the raised fifth rising one more half step. The one-by-one button above makes that quality easy to hear.
