How to play Faug on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-1-1-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- C♯: index finger, 1st fret of the C string.
- F: middle finger, 1st fret of the E string.
- A: ring finger, 2nd fret of the G string.
- Leave the A string open: A.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play Faug
- 6-5-5-4: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 10-9-9-8: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Faug the capo way
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 5th fret and play the open Caug shape (1-0-0-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Faug chord changes
Songs rarely hold Faug for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- B♭ (the raised fifth pushes up into the IV): Faug (2-1-1-0) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): the index finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, the middle finger slides across to the A string at the same fret, the ring finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 3rd fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. F carries over from one chord to the other. B♭ on ukulele
- C (V in F major): Faug (2-1-1-0) to C (0-0-0-3): your index finger lands on the A string, 3rd fret. C on ukulele
- Dm (vi in F major): Faug (2-1-1-0) to Dm (2-2-1-0): the index finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, move the middle finger to the G string, 2nd fret, the ring finger slides across to the C string at the same fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. F and A carry over from one chord to the other. Dm on ukulele
Faug is an augmented triad: two major thirds stacked, with a raised fifth. All 3 notes of Faug fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Practice Faug in two minutes
Before strumming, play 2-1-1-0 note by note: A then C♯ then F then A. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Next, alternate 2-1-1-0 and 6-5-5-4, slowly, until the change takes less than a beat.
