How to play Bm7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-2-2-2, reading from the G string on the left, starts at the 2nd fret:
- Put your index finger on the G string at the 2nd fret, which is A.
- Put your middle finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- Put your ring finger on the E string at the 2nd fret, which is F♯.
- Put your pinky finger on the A string at the 2nd fret, which is B.
- Your little finger has a job in this shape; it gets stronger in a week or two of short daily practice.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Bm7
- 7-9-7-9: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
- 11-11-10-12: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Playing Bm7 with a capo
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open Am7 shape (0-0-0-0) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Em7 shape (0-2-0-2). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Moving between Bm7 and its neighbours
The chords Bm7 usually goes to, and what changes under your fingers.
- E7 (V in A major): Bm7 (2-2-2-2) to E7 (1-2-0-2): your middle finger stays put, move the index finger to the G string, 1st fret, the ring finger slides across to the A string at the same fret. Listen for B and D, which stay put while the rest moves. E7 on ukulele
- Dmaj7 (IV in A major): Bm7 (2-2-2-2) to Dmaj7 (2-2-2-4): your index, middle and ring fingers stay put, move the pinky finger to the A string, 4th fret. That makes it one of the quickest changes from this chord. Shared notes: D, F♯ and A. Dmaj7 on ukulele
- Amaj7 (I in A major): Bm7 (2-2-2-2) to Amaj7 (1-1-0-0): the index finger goes to the G string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the C string, 1st fret. Listen for A, which stays put while the rest moves. Amaj7 on ukulele
Bm7 is a minor seventh chord: a minor triad plus a minor seventh. All 4 notes of Bm7 fit on the ukulele's four strings. Play it once strummed and once picked to hear the difference.
Getting Bm7 under your fingers
Before strumming, play 2-2-2-2 note by note: A then D then F♯ then B. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Next, alternate 2-2-2-2 and 7-9-7-9, slowly, until the change takes less than a beat.
