How to play Bm6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 1-2-2-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the G string at the 1st fret, which is G♯.
- Put your middle finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- Put your ring finger on the E string at the 2nd fret, which is F♯.
- Put your pinky finger on the A string at the 2nd fret, which is B.
- This shape uses your pinky. It feels weak at first; press with the tip and let the finger stay curved.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Bm6
- 4-6-4-5: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. Use it when the next chord sits nearby on the neck.
- 7-8-7-9: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
- 11-11-10-11: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Bm6 the capo way
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open Am6 shape (2-0-2-0). The chord sounds as Bm6 because the capo raises every string by 2 half steps.
Bm6 chord changes
Songs rarely hold Bm6 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- E (V in A major): Bm6 (1-2-2-2) to E (1-4-0-2): your index finger stays put, your middle finger lands on the A string, 2nd fret, move the ring finger to the C string, 4th fret. Shared notes: B and G♯. E on ukulele
- D (IV in A major): Bm6 (1-2-2-2) to D (2-2-2-0): your middle and ring fingers stay put, move the index finger to the G string, 2nd fret. Very little moves, so this change comes fast. D and F♯ carry over from one chord to the other. D on ukulele
- A (I in A major): Bm6 (1-2-2-2) to A (2-1-0-0): the index finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, the middle finger slides across to the G string at the same fret. A on ukulele
Bm6 is B minor with a major sixth added. All 4 notes of Bm6 fit on the ukulele's four strings. Play it once strummed and once picked to hear the difference.
A short Bm6 drill
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: G♯, D, F♯, B. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 4-6-4-5 and back four times without looking at your hand.
