How to play E♭sus2 on ukulele
Shape 1, 3-3-1-1, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the E string at the 1st fret, which is F.
- Put your middle finger on the A string at the 1st fret, which is B♭.
- Put your ring finger on the G string at the 3rd fret, which is B♭.
- Put your pinky finger on the C string at the 3rd fret, which is E♭.
- Your little finger has a job in this shape; it gets stronger in a week or two of short daily practice.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play E♭sus2
- 8-5-6-6: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 8-10-11-8: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Playing E♭sus2 with a capo
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 1st fret and play the open Dsus2 shape (2-2-0-0) or capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Csus2 shape (0-2-3-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Changing from E♭sus2 to the chords around it
These are the changes you'll meet most often with E♭sus2, using the first shape of each chord.
- E♭ (resolves up to the third): E♭sus2 (3-3-1-1) to E♭ (0-3-3-1): the index finger slides across to the A string at the same fret, the middle finger goes to the C string, 3rd fret, move the ring finger to the E string, 3rd fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. Listen for E♭ and B♭, which stay put while the rest moves. E♭ on ukulele
- A♭ (IV in E♭ major): E♭sus2 (3-3-1-1) to A♭ (1-3-4-3): the index finger goes to the G string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the C string, 3rd fret, your ring finger lands on the A string, 3rd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Listen for E♭, which stays put while the rest moves. A♭ on ukulele
- B♭ (V in E♭ major): E♭sus2 (3-3-1-1) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): your index and middle fingers stay put, move the ring finger to the C string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger slides across to the G string at the same fret. The two chords share F and B♭, which is why the change sounds smooth. B♭ on ukulele
E♭sus2 replaces the third with the second, so it is neither major nor minor. All 3 notes of E♭sus2 fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The open second in E♭sus2 usually rises to the third, so play E♭sus2 then E♭ and listen for it to settle. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Getting E♭sus2 under your fingers
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: B♭, E♭, F, B♭. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Next, alternate 3-3-1-1 and 8-5-6-6, slowly, until the change takes less than a beat.
D♯sus2 is another spelling of E♭sus2. Same shape, same sound.
