How to play F♯sus2 on ukulele
Shape 1, 1-1-2-4, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: G string, 1st fret (G♯).
- Middle finger: C string, 1st fret (C♯).
- Ring finger: E string, 2nd fret (F♯).
- Pinky: A string, 4th fret (C♯).
- The pinky takes a note here. Keep it curved and close to the fretboard between chords so it has less distance to travel.
- The shape stretches across four frets. Bring your thumb lower behind the neck to open the hand up.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play F♯sus2
- 6-6-4-4: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 11-8-9-9: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Playing F♯sus2 with a capo
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 4th fret and play the open Dsus2 shape (2-2-0-0) or capo on the 6th fret and play the open Csus2 shape (0-2-3-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Moving between F♯sus2 and its neighbours
These are the changes you'll meet most often with F♯sus2, using the first shape of each chord.
- F♯ (resolves up to the third): F♯sus2 (1-1-2-4) to F♯ (3-1-2-1): your ring finger stays put, the index finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, the middle finger goes to the A string, 1st fret, the pinky finger goes to the G string, 3rd fret. F♯ and C♯ carry over from one chord to the other. F♯ on ukulele
- B (IV in F♯ major): F♯sus2 (1-1-2-4) to B (4-3-2-2): the index finger goes to the E string, 2nd fret, your middle finger lands on the A string, 2nd fret, move the ring finger to the C string, 3rd fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. The two chords share F♯, which is why the change sounds smooth. B on ukulele
- C♯ (V in F♯ major): F♯sus2 (1-1-2-4) to C♯ (6-5-4-4): move the index finger to the E string, 4th fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 4th fret, the ring finger goes to the C string, 5th fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Shared notes: G♯ and C♯. C♯ on ukulele
F♯sus2 replaces the third with the second, so it is neither major nor minor. All 3 notes of F♯sus2 fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The open second in F♯sus2 usually rises to the third, so play F♯sus2 then F♯ and listen for it to settle. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Getting F♯sus2 under your fingers
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: G♯, C♯, F♯, C♯. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Next, alternate 1-1-2-4 and 6-6-4-4, slowly, until the change takes less than a beat.
G♭sus2 is another spelling of F♯sus2. Same shape, same sound.
