How to play Fsus4 on ukulele
Shape 1, 3-0-1-1, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: E string, 1st fret (F).
- Middle finger: A string, 1st fret (B♭).
- Ring finger: G string, 3rd fret (B♭).
- Let the open C string ring (C).
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Fsus4
- 5-5-6-8: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 10-10-8-8: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Playing Fsus4 with a capo
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Dsus4 shape (2-2-3-0) or capo on the 5th fret and play the open Csus4 shape (0-0-1-3). The chord sounds as Fsus4 because the capo raises every string by 3 half steps.
Changing from Fsus4 to the chords around it
Songs rarely hold Fsus4 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- F (resolves down to the third): Fsus4 (3-0-1-1) to F (2-0-1-0): your index finger stays put, move the middle finger to the G string, 2nd fret. Very little moves, so this change comes fast. Listen for F and C, which stay put while the rest moves. F on ukulele
- B♭ (IV in F major): Fsus4 (3-0-1-1) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): your index and middle fingers stay put, the ring finger goes to the C string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 3rd fret. F and B♭ carry over from one chord to the other. B♭ on ukulele
- C (V in F major): Fsus4 (3-0-1-1) to C (0-0-0-3): move the index finger to the A string, 3rd fret. The two chords share C, which is why the change sounds smooth. C on ukulele
Fsus4 lifts the third up to the fourth. All 3 notes of Fsus4 fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. Fsus4 holds the fourth where the third should be; drop it a half step or whole step into F or Fm to resolve. Play it once strummed and once picked to hear the difference.
