How to play F7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-3-1-3, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the E string at the 1st fret, which is F.
- Put your middle finger on the G string at the 2nd fret, which is A.
- Put your ring finger on the C string at the 3rd fret, which is E♭.
- Put your pinky finger on the A string at the 3rd fret, which is C.
- This shape uses your pinky. It feels weak at first; press with the tip and let the finger stay curved.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play F7
- 5-5-5-6: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Use it when the next chord sits nearby on the neck.
- 8-9-8-8: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Capo shortcuts for F7
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 1st fret and play the open E7 shape (1-2-0-2), capo on the 3rd fret and play the open D7 shape (2-2-2-3), capo on the 5th fret and play the open C7 shape (0-0-0-1) or capo on the 6th fret and play the open B7 shape (2-3-2-0).
