How to play A6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-1-2-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: C string, 1st fret (C♯).
- Middle finger: G string, 2nd fret (A).
- Ring finger: E string, 2nd fret (F♯).
- Let the open A string ring (A).
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play A6
- 6-6-5-7: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 9-9-9-9: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
A6 the capo way
A capo turns an open chord into A6: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open G6 shape (0-2-0-2) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open D6 shape (2-2-2-2). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
Changing from A6 to the chords around it
The chords A6 usually goes to, and what changes under your fingers.
- D (IV in A major): A6 (2-1-2-0) to D (2-2-2-0): your ring finger stays put, your index finger lands on the G string, 2nd fret, the middle finger slides across to the C string at the same fret. A and F♯ carry over from one chord to the other. D on ukulele
- E (V in A major): A6 (2-1-2-0) to E (1-4-0-2): the index finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the middle finger goes to the A string, 2nd fret, your ring finger lands on the C string, 4th fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Shared note: E. E on ukulele
- F♯m (vi in A major): A6 (2-1-2-0) to F♯m (2-1-2-0): your index, middle and ring fingers stay put. Very little moves, so this change comes fast. Shared notes: A, C♯ and F♯. F♯m on ukulele
A6 is A major with a major sixth added. With four strings, shape 1 leaves out the perfect fifth (E); the ear fills it in, and the chord still reads as A6. The usual guitar shape, x-0-2-2-2-2, has room for all of them. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
A short A6 drill
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: A, C♯, F♯, A. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 6-6-5-7 and back four times without looking at your hand.
