How to play F6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-2-1-3, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: E string, 1st fret (F).
- Middle finger: G string, 2nd fret (A).
- Ring finger: C string, 2nd fret (D).
- Pinky: A string, 3rd fret (C).
- Your little finger has a job in this shape; it gets stronger in a week or two of short daily practice.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play F6
- 5-5-5-5: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Use it when the next chord sits nearby on the neck.
- 10-9-10-8: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
F6 the capo way
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 3rd fret and play the open D6 shape (2-2-2-2) or capo on the 5th fret and play the open C6 shape (0-0-0-0). The chord sounds as F6 because the capo raises every string by 3 half steps.
Moving between F6 and its neighbours
The chords F6 usually goes to, and what changes under your fingers.
- B♭ (IV in F major): F6 (2-2-1-3) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): your index and ring fingers stay put, move the middle finger to the A string, 1st fret, your pinky finger lands on the G string, 3rd fret. The two chords share F and D, which is why the change sounds smooth. B♭ on ukulele
