How to play G6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-2-0-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- Put your middle finger on the A string at the 2nd fret, which is B.
- The open G and E strings add G and E; don't touch them.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play G6
- 7-7-7-7: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
- 12-11-12-10: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Playing G6 with a capo
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 5th fret and play the open D6 shape (2-2-2-2) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open C6 shape (0-0-0-0). The chord sounds as G6 because the capo raises every string by 5 half steps.
Moving between G6 and its neighbours
These are the changes you'll meet most often with G6, using the first shape of each chord.
- C (IV in G major): G6 (0-2-0-2) to C (0-0-0-3): your index finger lands on the A string, 3rd fret. Shared notes: G and E. C on ukulele
- D (V in G major): G6 (0-2-0-2) to D (2-2-2-0): the index finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the middle finger goes to the C string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Listen for D, which stays put while the rest moves. D on ukulele
- Em (vi in G major): G6 (0-2-0-2) to Em (0-4-3-2): move the index finger to the A string, 2nd fret, the middle finger goes to the E string, 3rd fret, the ring finger comes down on the C string, 4th fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. The two chords share G, B and E, which is why the change sounds smooth. Em on ukulele
