How to play Gmaj7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-2-2-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: C string, 2nd fret (D).
- Middle finger: E string, 2nd fret (F♯).
- Ring finger: A string, 2nd fret (B).
- Let the open G string ring (G).
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Gmaj7
- 7-7-7-9: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
- 11-11-10-10: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Gmaj7 the capo way
A capo turns an open chord into Gmaj7: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open Fmaj7 shape (2-4-1-3) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Cmaj7 shape (0-0-0-2). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
Changing from Gmaj7 to the chords around it
Songs rarely hold Gmaj7 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- Cmaj7 (IV in G major): Gmaj7 (0-2-2-2) to Cmaj7 (0-0-0-2): your index finger lands on the A string, 2nd fret. G and B carry over from one chord to the other. Cmaj7 on ukulele
- D7 (V in G major): Gmaj7 (0-2-2-2) to D7 (2-2-2-3): the index finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the middle finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, the ring finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, the pinky finger comes down on the A string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. The two chords share D and F♯, which is why the change sounds smooth. D7 on ukulele
- Em7 (vi in G major): Gmaj7 (0-2-2-2) to Em7 (0-2-0-2): your index finger stays put, the middle finger slides across to the A string at the same fret. An easy one to get up to speed. Shared notes: G, B and D. Em7 on ukulele
