How to play Fmaj7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-4-1-3, reading from the G string on the left:
- F: index finger, 1st fret of the E string.
- A: middle finger, 2nd fret of the G string.
- C: ring finger, 3rd fret of the A string.
- E: pinky finger, 4th fret of the C string.
- This shape uses your pinky. It feels weak at first; press with the tip and let the finger stay curved.
- A four-fret stretch: drop your wrist a little and point your thumb up the back of the neck.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.

- 5-5-0-0: open shape at the 5th fret, easy. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 9-9-8-8: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Fmaj7 the capo way
A capo turns an open chord into Fmaj7: capo on the 5th fret and play the open Cmaj7 shape (0-0-0-2). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
