How to play A7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-1-0-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- C♯: index finger, 1st fret of the C string.
- Leave the G, E and A strings open: G, E and A.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play A7
- 6-7-5-7: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 9-9-9-10: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
A7 the capo way
A capo turns an open chord into A7: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open G7 shape (0-2-1-2), capo on the 5th fret and play the open E7 shape (1-2-0-2) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open D7 shape (2-2-2-3). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
Moving between A7 and its neighbours
Songs rarely hold A7 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- D (the V7 pulls home a fifth below): A7 (0-1-0-0) to D (2-2-2-0): your index finger lands on the G string, 2nd fret, the middle finger comes down on the C string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. The two chords share A, which is why the change sounds smooth. D on ukulele
- Dmaj7 (I in D major): A7 (0-1-0-0) to Dmaj7 (2-2-2-4): move the index finger to the G string, 2nd fret, the middle finger comes down on the C string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Shared notes: A and C♯. Dmaj7 on ukulele
- Bm7 (vi in D major): A7 (0-1-0-0) to Bm7 (2-2-2-2): your index finger lands on the G string, 2nd fret, the middle finger comes down on the C string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. A carries over from one chord to the other. Bm7 on ukulele
