How to play C♯7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 1-1-1-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: G string, 1st fret (G♯).
- Middle finger: C string, 1st fret (C♯).
- Ring finger: E string, 1st fret (E♯).
- Pinky: A string, 2nd fret (B).
- The pinky takes a note here. Keep it curved and close to the fretboard between chords so it has less distance to travel.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play C♯7
- 4-5-4-4: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. Use it when the next chord sits nearby on the neck.
- 10-11-9-11: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
C♯7 the capo way
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 1st fret and play the open C7 shape (0-0-0-1), capo on the 2nd fret and play the open B7 shape (2-3-2-0), capo on the 4th fret and play the open A7 shape (0-1-0-0) or capo on the 6th fret and play the open G7 shape (0-2-1-2). The chord sounds as C♯7 because the capo raises every string by a half step.
Changing from C♯7 to the chords around it
Songs rarely hold C♯7 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- F♯ (the V7 pulls home a fifth below): C♯7 (1-1-1-2) to F♯ (3-1-2-1): the index finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, your middle finger lands on the A string, 1st fret, move the ring finger to the E string, 2nd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Shared note: C♯. F♯ on ukulele
- F♯maj7 (I in F♯ major): C♯7 (1-1-1-2) to F♯maj7 (3-5-2-4): the index finger goes to the E string, 2nd fret, your middle finger lands on the G string, 3rd fret, move the ring finger to the A string, 4th fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. The two chords share C♯ and E♯, which is why the change sounds smooth. F♯maj7 on ukulele
- E♭m7 (vi in F♯ major): C♯7 (1-1-1-2) to E♭m7 (3-3-2-4): the index finger goes to the E string, 2nd fret, the middle finger goes to the G string, 3rd fret, move the ring finger to the C string, 3rd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. C♯ carries over from one chord to the other. E♭m7 on ukulele
C♯7 is a dominant seventh chord: a major triad with a flattened seventh on top. All 4 notes of C♯7 fit on the ukulele's four strings. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
A short C♯7 drill
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: G♯, C♯, E♯, B. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 4-5-4-4 and back four times without looking at your hand.
You may also see it as D♭7; nothing changes on the ukulele.
