How to play Eaug on ukulele
Shape 1, 1-0-0-3, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the G string at the 1st fret, which is G♯.
- Put your middle finger on the A string at the 3rd fret, which is B♯.
- The open C and E strings add B♯ and E; don't touch them.
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Eaug
- 5-4-4-7: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 9-8-8-7: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Eaug the capo way
A capo turns an open chord into Eaug: capo on the 4th fret and play the open Caug shape (1-0-0-3). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
Moving between Eaug and its neighbours
These are the changes you'll meet most often with Eaug, using the first shape of each chord.
- A (the raised fifth pushes up into the IV): Eaug (1-0-0-3) to A (2-1-0-0): the index finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, move the middle finger to the G string, 2nd fret. E carries over from one chord to the other. A on ukulele
- B (V in E major): Eaug (1-0-0-3) to B (4-3-2-2): your index finger lands on the E string, 2nd fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the C string, 3rd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 4th fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. B on ukulele
- C♯m (vi in E major): Eaug (1-0-0-3) to C♯m (6-4-4-4): move the index finger to the C string, 4th fret, move the middle finger to the E string, 4th fret, the ring finger comes down on the A string, 4th fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 6th fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. Shared notes: E and G♯. C♯m on ukulele
Eaug is an augmented triad: two major thirds stacked, with a raised fifth. All 3 notes of Eaug fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Getting Eaug under your fingers
Arpeggiate 1-0-0-3 from the lowest string: G♯, B♯, E, B♯. Then strum it and listen for the same 4 notes together. Then switch to 5-4-4-7 and back four times without looking at your hand.
