How to play E♭aug on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-3-3-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: A string, 2nd fret (B).
- Middle finger: C string, 3rd fret (E♭).
- Ring finger: E string, 3rd fret (G).
- Let the open G string ring (G).
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play E♭aug
- 8-7-7-6: movable shape at the 6th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- 12-11-11-10: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Playing E♭aug with a capo
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Caug shape (1-0-0-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
E♭aug chord changes
The chords E♭aug usually goes to, and what changes under your fingers.
- A♭ (the raised fifth pushes up into the IV): E♭aug (0-3-3-2) to A♭ (1-3-4-3): your middle finger stays put, your index finger lands on the G string, 1st fret, the ring finger slides across to the A string at the same fret, the pinky finger comes down on the E string, 4th fret. Listen for E♭, which stays put while the rest moves. A♭ on ukulele
- B♭ (V in E♭ major): E♭aug (0-3-3-2) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): your index finger lands on the E string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 1st fret, the ring finger goes to the C string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. B♭ on ukulele
- Cm (vi in E♭ major): E♭aug (0-3-3-2) to Cm (0-3-3-3): your index finger lands on the C string, 3rd fret, the middle finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, the ring finger slides across to the A string at the same fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. Listen for E♭ and G, which stay put while the rest moves. Cm on ukulele
E♭aug is an augmented triad: two major thirds stacked, with a raised fifth. All 3 notes of E♭aug fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. Play it once strummed and once picked to hear the difference.
A short E♭aug drill
Before strumming, play 0-3-3-2 note by note: G then E♭ then G then B. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Finish by moving between 0-3-3-2 and 8-7-7-6 to learn two positions of the same chord.
Written D♯aug, it's the same chord with the same frets.
