How to play G♭aug on ukulele
Shape 1, 3-2-2-1, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: A string, 1st fret (B♭).
- Middle finger: C string, 2nd fret (D).
- Ring finger: E string, 2nd fret (G♭).
- Pinky: G string, 3rd fret (B♭).
- The pinky takes a note here. Keep it curved and close to the fretboard between chords so it has less distance to travel.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play G♭aug
- 7-6-6-5: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 11-10-10-9: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Capo shortcuts for G♭aug
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 6th fret and play the open Caug shape (1-0-0-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Changing from G♭aug to the chords around it
These are the changes you'll meet most often with G♭aug, using the first shape of each chord.
- B (the raised fifth pushes up into the IV): G♭aug (3-2-2-1) to B (4-3-2-2): move the index finger to the E string, 2nd fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 2nd fret, the ring finger goes to the C string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Shared note: G♭. B on ukulele
- C♯ (V in F♯ major): G♭aug (3-2-2-1) to C♯ (6-5-4-4): move the index finger to the E string, 4th fret, the middle finger goes to the A string, 4th fret, your ring finger lands on the C string, 5th fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. C♯ on ukulele
- E♭m (vi in F♯ major): G♭aug (3-2-2-1) to E♭m (3-3-2-1): your index finger stays put, the middle finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, the ring finger goes to the G string, 3rd fret, the pinky finger slides across to the C string at the same fret. G♭ and B♭ carry over from one chord to the other. E♭m on ukulele
G♭aug is an augmented triad: two major thirds stacked, with a raised fifth. All 3 notes of G♭aug fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Practice G♭aug in two minutes
Before strumming, play 3-2-2-1 note by note: B♭ then D then G♭ then B♭. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Next, alternate 3-2-2-1 and 7-6-6-5, slowly, until the change takes less than a beat.
F♯aug is another spelling of G♭aug. Same shape, same sound.
