How to play Dm6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-2-1-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: E string, 1st fret (F).
- Middle finger: G string, 2nd fret (A).
- Ring finger: C string, 2nd fret (D).
- Pinky: A string, 2nd fret (B).
- This shape uses your pinky. It feels weak at first; press with the tip and let the finger stay curved.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Dm6
- 4-5-5-5: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 7-9-7-8: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
- 10-11-10-12: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Playing Dm6 with a capo
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 5th fret and play the open Am6 shape (2-0-2-0). The chord sounds as Dm6 because the capo raises every string by 5 half steps.
Changing from Dm6 to the chords around it
These are the changes you'll meet most often with Dm6, using the first shape of each chord.
- G (V in C major): Dm6 (2-2-1-2) to G (0-2-3-2): the index finger goes to the C string, 2nd fret, the middle finger goes to the A string, 2nd fret, your ring finger lands on the E string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Shared notes: D and B. G on ukulele
- F (IV in C major): Dm6 (2-2-1-2) to F (2-0-1-0): your index and middle fingers stay put. That makes it one of the quickest changes from this chord. F and A carry over from one chord to the other. F on ukulele
- C (I in C major): Dm6 (2-2-1-2) to C (0-0-0-3): move the index finger to the A string, 3rd fret. C on ukulele
Dm6 is D minor with a major sixth added. All 4 notes of Dm6 fit on the ukulele's four strings. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Practice Dm6 in two minutes
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: A, D, F, B. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Finish by moving between 2-2-1-2 and 4-5-5-5 to learn two positions of the same chord.
