How to play Gm6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-2-0-1, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the A string at the 1st fret, which is B♭.
- Put your middle finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- The open G and E strings add G and E; don't touch them.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play Gm6
- 7-7-6-7: movable shape at the 6th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 9-10-10-10: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Gm6 the capo way
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 5th fret and play the open Dm6 shape (2-2-1-2). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Gm6 chord changes
Songs rarely hold Gm6 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- C (V in F major): Gm6 (0-2-0-1) to C (0-0-0-3): your index finger lands on the A string, 3rd fret. Listen for G and E, which stay put while the rest moves. C on ukulele
- B♭ (IV in F major): Gm6 (0-2-0-1) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): the index finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, your middle finger lands on the A string, 1st fret, the ring finger comes down on the C string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. The two chords share B♭ and D, which is why the change sounds smooth. B♭ on ukulele
- F (I in F major): Gm6 (0-2-0-1) to F (2-0-1-0): the index finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, the middle finger slides across to the G string at the same fret. F on ukulele
